FASHION WEEK FAVS

(posted by pai)

Many of our favorite designers have recently finished showing their Fall 2010 collections in New York, Paris, and other cities that I wish I lived in, and I figured why don't I go through and pick out some of my favorite looks/pieces off the runway from designers we'll be carrying this Spring? My opinion has some weight, right? No? Well either way, it's a walk-off...

BAND OF OUTSIDERS

When it comes to sweatpants, I think Jerry Seinfeld said it best:

I absolutely hate when people wear sweatpants. I feel like every time you see someone wearing sweatpants they're over a decade old and have the logo from your high school swim team down the side, and they're always dirty. Why are they always dirty? Because people in sweatpants eat potato chips all of the time. Not Pringles either, Lays, the kind that are greasy and require you to wipe your fingers on your sweatpants to get all the grease off. It's all very disturbing to me. I don't even like it when people wear sweatpants around the house. It's lazy looking. I wear a tuxedo around the house. Get like me.

But this isn't a blog entry about things I don't like. I did that on Monday when I blogged about the Winter Olympics. I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I really like the sweatpants in this look. They're tailored and slim, so they don't remind you of the ill-fitting high school throwback sweatpants you've acquired over the years. The slim silhouette makes these look like a pair of trousers with the comfort of a pair of sweats, so they look good, and feel even better. Over thirty inches of snow in DC and Payman saying he likes the way sweatpants look-if these aren't signs of the armageddon I don't know what are. Someone call Bruce Willis.

There was also a pair of shoes from Band's Fall 2010 show that caught my eye, and by "caught my eye" I mean, "made me fall out of my chair and begin convulsing." See below:

Holy shit.

Scott Sternberg has gone and turned the fashion world on its head by designing what are presumably Chewbacca shoes. I went ahead and cropped out the rest of the look because it doesn't really matter what else the guy was wearing, this is the strongest look of the show. He could've been stark naked and standing around in these shoes and it would've been cool. I'm hoping these will actually go into production and they weren't used solely for the show's sake. Either way, they make me wanna stand up and make this sound:

On an unrelated note-there are several disturbing clips on YouTube of Star Wars fans attempting to recreate that sound that I wish I had not seen when I went looking for the clip above. Needless to say, I will be having nightmares tonight...

While you wait for Band's Fall 2010 stuff to come out (it's still February, you have some time) check out ShopFarinellis.com because we've marked down our Winter 2009 collection, and keep your eye on the blog as we are expecting their Spring 2010 pieces soon!

SIMON SPURR

Nothing makes me want to go out and buy a lottery ticket more than a Simon Spurr show, and Fall 2010 was no exception. Every season, Spurr brings us the best in fabrics, construction, and tailoring, and makes our hearts and wallets weep. Each and every look is deadly, but here's one of my favorites:

Simon did a raspberry red leather jacket in the previous season that Nathan really liked, but I really dig the more muted burgundy this bomber comes in. It's almost too nice. Like if I wore it out to a bar and someone bumped into me or spilt something on it, I'd have to start a fight in the same way a normal person would start a fight if someone said something offensive to their wife. Of course, if you've ever met me, or if you've read the "model is 6'0, 140 lbs" line on the item pages of our website, you know that I have no business starting fights, and owning this jacket would probably lead to me getting my ass kicked. In other words, Spurr's collection is trouble, but if you like to live dangerously and look good while doing it, it may be right up your alley.

Be sure to check out the Spurr Pipe and Classic jeans on our website as they are currently on sale and we are expecting restocks soon!

BUCKLER

Andrew Buckler is the man, and we were all pretty excited to see his Fall 2010 collection. He didn't disappoint. Here's my favorite look:

This look stood out for a number of reasons. For one, his show featured a lot of grey and black (which I liked), so naturally, the colorful plaid pattern got my attention. Further, I've always felt like Buckler has always done an amazing job of layering pieces, and the buttondown over a sweatshirt is something I never thought of, but totally dig. Here I am, inside the box, thinking buttondowns should be worn underneath a sweater, and there goes Andrew, flipping it on me.

I really recommend checking out Buckler's entire show. His designs are fashion forward, but at the same time, they're wearable by the every day guy. Needless to say, we can't wait to get our Spring 2010 order from Buckler. In the meantime, check out their Sexy Bastard briefs and socks on ShopFarinellis.com!

ROBERT GELLER

Robert Geller continues to show us why he was the 2009 GQ/CFDA Best New Menswear Designer. Here's my favorite look from his Fall 2010 show:

Seriously, give me one of everything. I want every single piece in that look. I want the skinny grey jeans so I can tuck them into my black Wings + Horns Service Boots, I want the coat because this is the most miserable winter ever, I want whatever that rope thing around the model's waist is to keep my pants up and make me look awesome, and I want the white fur vest so I can go to the club, be a baller, and pop bottles. I am counting down the days until we get our Spring 2010 buy from Geller!

And that's all for pai. What are your favorite Fall 2010 shows so far? Let me know in a comment so we can enjoy some fashion-related banter with one another! Seriously... I need friends...

WEAR A SUIT, DON'T BE ONE

Scott Sternberg, designer for Band of Outsiders, is one of the funnier guys in the fashion industry. Who could forget his "Rules of Style" that he gave Details magazine? Any videos or interviews with him are always entertaining, so we thought we'd share this one we found on how to wear a casual suit with you:

And don't forget, a casual suit goes with a Band of Outsiders tie/bow tie like milk with cookies:

ON SALE: BAND OF OUTSIDERS NECKWEAR

(posted by pai)

There's something distinguished about a good piece of neckwear. Something very Ron Burgandy. Something very "my house smells of rich mahogany." Having said that, I don't think there's anything stuffy about wearing a tie, or even a bow tie for that matter. Quite the contrary, wearing a loosened up tie with the top button of your shirt undone in the summer time is one of the coolest things you can do, right up there with debating the lessons of The Great Gatsby with friends, or driving a monster truck/cement mixer truck. I don't want to get started, but cement mixer trucks are some of the coolest things ever invented.

If your tie collection is lacking, you are in luck, because we are having a sale on all Band of Outsiders neckwear! Here's one of my favorites:

Band of Outsiders Navy 4 Repp Stripe Tie
$130 (On Sale: $104)

I like this tie for the simple reason that it has almost every single color in it, yet it's not very ostentatious, and a subtle introduction of color to any outfit is always a plus for those who want to look good. If you don't want to look good, I don't know what to tell you. Why are you even reading this blog? Shouldn't you be reading a blog about something else? Anyway, if you're more of a classic and conservative sort of guy, we've got plain black and light blue ties that are slim, but not too skinny, that you can check out on ShopFarinellis.com.

If you have any questions about how to wear a tie casually without it looking too contrived, leave us a comment or shoot me an e-mail at info@shopfarinellis.com and I will gladly help you out, because that's the kind of person that I am.

DON'T FEAR FASHION

(posted by pai)

I really hope that everyone that reads this blog reads Valet Mag (valetmag.com) as well. It's one of the better men's fashion/lifestyle magazines out there, and one of my favorites. The other day I was reading through this "31 days" piece they are doing. Basically, for each day of January, they give you a different tip to make you a better person this year. It's sort of like having a condescending roommate who is always telling you your faults, except they do it in a nicer, more constructive manner. Anyway, day 8 really caught my eye. The tip for that particular day is "Don't Fear Fashion." You can read the article here:

For those of you who were too lazy or just unwilling to click the link above and read the whopping two paragraph article, I'll sum it up for you: it's an expert telling you to man up and get out of your comfort zone with your clothes.

I know the idea of not fearing fashion might be scary to some, especially those who have seen David Bowie's music video for his 1980 hit, "Fashion":

This pretty much sums up the 80's. It didn't really make sense, but you know you enjoyed it.

Yikes. Anyway, you need to get over this fear of fashion. Fear Dracula. Fear wolfmen. Don't fear fashion. I fully support experimenting with items that might seem "hard to pull off", like a bow tie:

Or you could even add a pair of classic wide-leg trousers to your closet:

The point is, clothes/fashion/style-it's all about confidence. You could walk out of your house wearing a neon orange tuxedo like you're Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber, but if you wear it with the right attitude, you'll look good.

Look at that attitude!

That may have been a stretch... Please don't tell people that Farinelli's told you to wear a neon orange tuxedo and top hat. That definitely wouldn't help our credibility. I hope you see what I'm saying though. Have fun, experiment with all sorts of different clothes, and take some risks. Most importantly, don't let your style get boring! You're better than that, especially if you are still reading this blog post after that Dumb and Dumber reference...

JUST IN: LOTS OF STUFF

(posted by pai)

Well it's a big day here at the store, full of picture-taking, measuring, dancing, singing, crying, basket-weaving, and some light masonry. We've got a boatload of new merchandise in (just in time for the holidays!) and I'm here to break all the new stuff down like a fraction for you.

MICHAEL J. KRELL X FARINELLI'S BARN COAT COLLABORATION

First up is the anticipated Michael J. Krell x Farinelli's Barn Coat. Many moons ago, Mauro made a trip out to the midwest (Omaha, Nebraska, home of Michael J. Krell, to be exact), to collaborate on a warm outerwear piece for the harsh winter ahead. Seriously, have you been outside? It was 36 degrees at noon today. It's only mid-December. I cry when I think of how cold it's going to be in January. But don't cry, dry your eye, because Farinelli's and Michael J. Krell have teamed up to bring you what is probably the warmest coat we've ever carried. Introducing, the Michael J. Krell x Farinelli's Barn Coat:

Michael J. Krell x Farinelli's Barn Coat
$385

As is the case with all of our collaborations, there's a very limited run available. Only fourteen units total will ever be made, so if you have one, you are 1/14, and we all love exclusivity. The coat is inspired by Krell and Mauro's interpretation of a classic barn/tractor coat. Older garments usually had flannel quilted on the inside of a much heavier outer shell, and they both felt like you don't see this type of design enough today. The shell of the coat is made of a heavyweight buffalo-check fabric from the mills of Woolrich, PA., the flannel lining is from Japan, and the entire garment was handmade in Iowa. These coats have a little bit of everywhere in them.

As far as sizing goes, the barn coat is designed to have a regular/relaxed fit, so don't be alarmed if it's not fitted on you, and buy the same size you'd usually wear. The jacket is made for layering underneath to ensure your warmth. The sleeves are ever so slightly shorter than on a normal jacket because the jacket is intended to be worn with gloves, and barn coats sometimes have shorter sleeves to ensure they don't get caught in machinery. We weren't joking when we said this thing was inspired by traditional work coats.

Get to ShopFarinellis.com and pick up one of the fourteen and never feel cold again!

SEXY BASTARD BY ANDREW BUCKLER SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR

For those who couldn't make it out to last weekend's Buckler Pop-Up Shop in the store, we're now carrying some of our favorite pieces from the Sexy Bastard by Buckler line in the store and on our website! We have received underwear and socks in a number of styles and colors. Finally, you can hide your thunder in style! Did we mention that these make great stocking stuffers? Because these make great stocking stuffers!

Yesterday we told you about all of our new Band of Outsiders shirts, and today we bring you all new Band of Outsiders ties! We've got a couple new neck ties, but my personal favorites are the new clip-on bow ties:

Band of Outsiders Clip-On Bow Ties
$120
Available in black, grey, and crimson red

There is something distinguished about a bow tie. Something that says "hey, what's up, I'm cooler than you are." A subtle bow tie like the ones above can take an ordinary outfit and make it spaceman cool, and spaceman cool is just out of this world, so you should always strive to achieve it. Ties are always a good gift, but Band of Outsiders ties are GREAT gifts!

JUST IN: BAND OF OUTSIDERS

(posted by pai)

If you're sitting around trying to figure out what you want to get yourself for the holidays (I know I'm not the only one who does more shopping for myself than for others this time of the year), stop thinking, because we've got you covered. We've just received a pretty sizable shipment from our favorite label named after a old Jean-Luc Goddard movie, Band of Outsiders! We've got more tailored oxfords and button down shirts than you can shake a candy cane at.

Band of Outsiders Purple Overdye Oxford
$216

The purple overdye oxford is my favorite piece from this shipment, and I'm digging it for a number of reasons. First of all, when I wore it for the picture above, Nathan said "oh Payman, that looks pretty good on you." This is momentous because Nathan has complimented me exactly one other time in my time at Farinelli's, and that was when he came back from vacation and seemed surprised the store hadn't burned to the ground... I think that was a compliment... Either way, Nathan spends most of his time making people (read: me) cry, so when he actually compliments you, it means you probably look pretty rad.

I also really like this oxford for a small detail you may not have noticed unless you looked very closely at the picture above: it's really purple. Most guys are scared of color, and those same guys are terrified of colors like purple or pink. First of all, you need to tame your fear of colors. They're not a wolf-man or a Dracula, so stop hyperventilating. Purple is actually relatively easy to pull off. The trick is to keep the rest of your outfit muted. Try this oxford with a pair of black jeans and black boots. Suddenly you're the most stylish guy in the room and people envy your ability to pull off things they can only dream of wearing. Great.

A lot of awesome people have worn purple, so you have no reason to fear it:

Donatello from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"
He chose purple... And he was the smart/scientist ninja turtle, so form your conclusions.

Brett Favre, Quarterback, Minnesota Vikings
He was good in green, but he's 11-2 in purple...

This guy
I Googled "royalty" and this guy showed up. He's in purple, he's got a wench, and he looks like he's not to be trifled with.

So there you have it. If you want to be cool, you wear purple, so go to ShopFarinellis.com and order the Band of Outsiders Purple Overdye Oxford. You can be as cool as me, and I am really cool...

WHAT'S UP, DECEMBER?

(posted by pai)

We're still sorting through the aftermath of the Thanksgiving sales from last week-over one-hundred orders, and only one pai and Nathan-but right on time as it is every year, December has arrived. December is a great month. It's the holiday season, so everyone kind of feels obligated to be nice to one another, the weather starts to really get cold so you can start layering up and wearing that ridiculously nice Krane jacket you bought from us, and it ends with New Year's-a holiday that makes your alcoholism okay.

Here are some of the things I am looking forward to this December:

NEW BAND OF OUTSIDERS

Even though it's getting late in the F/W '09 season (fashion-wise), we were able to get some new Band of Outsiders product in the store for the holiday season. We are expecting this new stuff at the end of the month or at the latest early January. You can expect all kinds of new button-ups, including the sick ginghams from this season, as well as ties and bow ties! In the meantime, check out the wool mini stripe tie we've got online-there's only one left, and it's one of the coolest Band ties I've ever seen:

Band of Outsiders Wool Mini Stripe Tie in Green/Black/White
$130

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS

Set to release on Christmas Day is Heath Ledger's last movie before his passing, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. I'm a sucker for neat-sounding movie titles (I once rented Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium for this very reason), and as far as this one goes, it had me at "imaginarium." Check out the trailer:

Wow. Doesn't that look like an 92 minute acid trip?

THE END OF THE NFL REGULAR SEASON

This is the time of the year when we separate the really good teams from the really bad ones. Saints? They're good. Redskins? Not so much. Sorry local fans, but December probably isn't as exciting for you because the playoff race ended back in September in Washington. As a Falcons fan, this time of the year is especially exciting for me because this is usually right when the Falcons blow it and miss the playoffs (and right on cue, Matt Ryan has been ruled out of next week's game with turf toe).

Chris Redman, former backup in Baltimore to KYLE BOLLER. My Falcons' hopes of a December playoff push rest on this guy's shoulders... Who are we kidding here?

So there it is. That's pretty much all I've got going for me this December. What are you guys looking forward to this month? Let me know via comment, or just call the store and scream it over the phone.

Girls who are Boys, Who like Boys to be Girls

Although we were never quite able to suss out the meaning of those Blur lyrics, we like 'em anyway, because they remind us of just how fluid fashion is these days. Take for example our amazing collection of men's workwear here at Farinelli's. Sure, you might not be packing your Thermos and metal lunch pail every morning for a hard day's work in a lumberyard or steel mill, but you still like that connection to our industrial roots and the rugged clothes they produced. And - we bet - so does your wife or girlfriend.

That's right, guys! She secretly wants to raid your closet. Those plaids? They'd look great with her dark denim. The quilted overcoat? Perfect for layering with a leggings. But if you have a hard time keeping her out of your duds, we have one suggestion: bring her shopping here at Farinelli's, where you can both enjoy the offerings of our men's selection. Don't believe us? Check out these looks...

Here's a layered look of grays and blacks, with a pop of washed-out red to add a dash of color. The skinny denim offsets the volume on top, and pieces can easily be shed or added, depending on the weather. Here's the rundown:

Rag & Bone S/S Chambray Shirt in Red - Size S

A.P.C. Cashmere Blend Cardigan in Black - Size M

Engineered Garments Bedford Jacket in BlackxGrey Argyle - Size S

Spurr Pipe Leg in Gray - Size 29

Nice Collective Leather Coin Necklace in Black (in-store)

Nothing says cooler weather like a nice buffalo check shirt jacket, and this is one of the best. Mix textures like boiled wool, oxford cloth, and corduroy for a casual look that says, "I care enough to look like I don't care." Here's the rundown:

Band of Outsiders White Oxford - Size S

Apolis Activism Defend Tomorrow Tee - Size M

Woolrich Woolen Mills Upland Jacket - Size XS

Spurr Pipe Leg in Black Corduroy - Size 29

Nice Collective Leather Coin Necklace in Black

For the artist in all of us, a tunic-length button down pairs nicely with waffle-weave and woven plaid. Keep the denim raw and simple and you're as good as gold. Oh, and have we mentioned how much we love a good button here at Farinellis? Well, we do. Here's the rundown:

Thermal Crew Neck in White - Size S (in-store)

Band of Outsiders Green/Navy Light Flannel - Size S

A.P.C. Short-Sleeve Navy Button-down - Size XS

Jean Shop Long Skinny Fit - Size 20 (in-store)

Nice Collective Leather Coin Necklace in Brown

So c'mon, drag her in here (wink, wink - we know you want to shop, too!) to pick up something fun that both of you will like. And who knows? Maybe you'll be raiding her closet in the near future...

LOOK OF THE WEEK

(posted by pai)

Hello world! We're starting the new week off right with another Look of the Week! Who doesn't love looks of the week? We love styling outfits, you guys love looking at pictures of me, and Nathan gets the chance to make witty remarks like "please stop making that MySpace page face" when I am trying to get my model on. Your classic win-win-win scenario.

Last time (click to see last time) we tried to add some color to our look without looking like we were screaming "HEY, LOOK AT ME!!!" so naturally, this week we hit the grayscale button and kept it monotone. Without further adieu:

This look is called "Magnum"
Krane Emory Hooded Bomber
APC Cardigan
Band of Outsiders Multi-Crest Tie
Band of Outsiders White Overdye Oxford
Spurr Pipe Leg Jean in Grey

You're probably thinking, "pai, why so serious?" I'm looking very serious in that picture because that is a seriously good-looking outfit. Notice that I've got a couple layers on underneath the Krane jacket, but my upper half doesn't look bulky. The reason for this is two-fold: 1) I haven't had a chance to the hit gym and really put some work in on my pectorals, so I have a bird chest, and 2) Krane's jackets are made to keep you warm in the Winter, but they're also tailored really well, so the cut is fitted but you still have plenty of room to layer underneath without looking like you're an eight month pregnant guy (like Arnold Schwarzenegger in that movie Junior... On an unrelated note, can you believe he is a governor? Gotta give it up to California...).

APC Cardigan
Band of Outsiders Multi-Crest Tie
Band of Outsiders White Overdye Oxford
Spurr Pipe Leg Jean in Grey

This picture is intended to show you what I've got on underneath the jacket. (Please disregard the 5 o'clock shadow and the beginnings of what appear to be an incredibly creepy mustache.) This outfit says "I can dress in black and white and not look like a penguin." That's not to say there's anything wrong with looking like a penguin. I challenge you to watch March of the Penguins and not cry... It can't be done!

And that is our second look of the week. If there any pieces you'd like to see us style into one of these posts, feel free to comment and let us know what we can do for next week!

LOOK OF THE WEEK

(posted by pai)

Let me preface this blog post by saying that by no means am I a model. I've got the body of a chiseled god, but I've never done model pictures with my face in them. Who nose why... Also, working with Nathan as a photographer is sort of scary. It's like working with Omarosa from The Apprentice or New York from I Love New York. It's safe to say that Nathan brought gin to a juice party...

That being said, we've decided to do something fun here every week (and by "every week," I mean every now and then when we get a chance). We're going to start putting together outfits with the clothes we've got on hand to make a "look of the week." This week, Nathan and Mauro decided to style me in Band of Outsiders, A.P.C., and a certain secret brand we aren't allowed to write about. Here are the pictures below:

A.P.C. Casual Jacket
A.P.C. Cashmere Crewneck Sweater
Band of Outsiders Navy 4 Repp Stripe Tie
Band of Outsiders Red Overdye Oxford
Chinos (call to inquire about them)
Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot in Rust (not pictured)

Mauro and Nathan really wanted to style an outfit that is versatile and can be worn all day for a different effect. The first look has me layered up to teeth. This outfit is great for a business casual day at work. The red underneath the gray is a great way to add some color to your look without being too ostentatious. It draws attention to you, but it does it on your own terms.

A.P.C. Cashmere Crewneck Sweater
Band of Outsiders Navy 4 Repp Stripe Tie
Band of Outsiders Red Overdye Oxford
Chinos (call to inquire about them)
Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot in Rust (not pictured)

In the second look, I've lost the jacket and I've rolled my sleeves up to show off some more color. Remember guys - don't fear color, just don't wear it so that your outfit looks like you're saying "HEY! LOOK AT ME!!!" You don't want to look like someone whose caps lock button is broken.

A.P.C. Casual Jacket
Band of Outsiders Navy 4 Repp Stripe Tie
Band of Outsiders Red Overdye Oxford
Chinos (call to inquire about them)
Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot in Rust (not pictured)

This last look shows that by simply losing the cashmere sweater, you've created a slightly more casual look that is great for going from work to the bar or to dinner with some friends. Or, if you don't have friends, for going to the bar or dinner with yourself. Also, if you don't have friends, we'll be your friends.

So there you have it, our first look of the week. Going forward: everyone keep your eyes open for my blog post about how Nathan destroyed my self-esteem throughout the course of this photoshoot. Also, look for other looks of the week in the weeks to come!

FALL PLAID

Our friends over at Valet Mag have written a great article on "plaidittude." It talks about all the cool plaid button downs you can expect to find on store shelves this coming Fall. (Click here to check out the article on ValetMag.com). This got me thinking about the great plaids that we are carrying here. Here are some of our favorites:

JUST IN: BAND OF OUTSIDERS POLO COAT

The round of summer sales over the past few weeks has really done a number on the clothing racks in our stores, so we're very excited to announce that we've received our first shipment for fall/winter '09 from Band of Outsiders. This latest piece from Band is handmade in Brooklyn, NY at Greenfield Clothiers (click here to read our blog post on Martin Greenfield from a couple months ago). The Camel Hair Polo Coat might be the single most badass coat we've ever carried at the store. This jacket says "I have my own yacht, and I know how to have fun, but I'm also into staying warm in the winter time. Are you okay with that? It doesn't matter, apologies are not required when I'm wearing this coat."

Band of Outsiders x Martin Greenfield

We love ourselves a good story here at Farinelli's, and few are as good as Martin Greenfield's, owner of Martin Greenfield Clothiers in Brooklyn, NY (the very same place that hand-tailors Band of Outsiders' suits and blazers). I could sit here and tell you Martin's story, but Ed David's short film about Greenfield's life and work is far more interesting than anything I could type:

Martin the Tailor from Ed David on Vimeo.

Besides being the epitome of cool, Martin makes sure that every Band of Outsiders suit is expertly hand-tailored at his factory. That means setting every piece of fabric by hand before sewing, hand-basting the inner and outer shell of the lapel so it gently rolls back, and sewing each buttonhole by hand with silk thread. Translation: the person who made your suit loved it just as much as you will. Get in the store and get your hands on a Band of Outsiders x Martin Greenfield suit!
